This class will examine the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ up until the hijra. The class will go beyond the traditional seerah narrative and examine the social, political, and economic underpinnings of the time period. Special attention will be paid to the spiritual and moral dimension of the seerah with an emphasis on tying together passages from the Qur'an with incidents in the seerah.
An open mind! You do not need to be a practicing Muslim or even a Muslim to attend. However, given the nature of the course, it will be most beneficial for those who are already Muslim and wish to increase in their knowledge of the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
Full syllabus will be posted before the start of class.
We will begin our first class with an introduction to the seerah and set the framework by identifying the world stage before the advent of the Prophet ﷺ. Our last class will conclude with the departure of the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah.
Bachelor's in History, Bachelors in Islamic Studies (in progress), memorized Qur'an, self-study.
