This course will introduce students to drawing fundamentals. Upon completing the course, students will have developed technical and conceptual ability, knowledge and comfort level with drawing media, and confidence in rendering from still life as well as photographic sources.

Syllabus

CLASS STRUCTURE

Each Monday and Wednesday and Friday, I will be posting assignments as a self post on r/drawing1. These are to be completed on your own time, but ideally before the next assignment is given. Post your finished assignment as a comment on the assignment thread. Once you have posted your assignment, please give constructive feedback to other students. It is important that this class has a dialogue between us. Art is, after all, a conversation.

There is also a sketchbook component to the course. Each student will be keeping a visual journal, to sketch in, paste visual information, bits and scraps of interesting things, poems, song lyrics, etc.

MATERIALS

While I love digital media, and have recently begun to really embrace it in my own work, this class will focus on traditional drawing media. I recommend purchasing the following:

-Drawing Pad at least 18x24, brand not so important for this class. Paper quality should be better than newsprint. Don't get newsprint.

-Separate Sketchbook - A smaller sketchbook that will not be used for the greater assignments, but for keeping your eye looking and your hand moving. Doesn't need to be anything expensive (a la moleskine), but about that size is what you are looking for.

-Compressed Charcoal. DO NOT GET VINE CHARCOAL.

-White Charcoal

-Drawing Pencils. 2h, 2b, 4b

-Kneaded Eraser.

Week 2 - Finding Form mass gesture, linear gesture

Week 3 - The Edge and Beyond contour, positive/negative space

Week 4 - Real Space overlap, perspective, maps?

Week 5 - Checkpoint "midterm assignment"

Week 6 - Quantity over Quality Work work work Crit crit crit

Week 7 - Finishing a Drawing all three days for one drawing

Week 8 - Light and Dark Patterns of light, cloth, reflections, light sources

Week 9- Express Yourself drawing an emotion, psychogeography

Week 10- Grande Finale ????

Also, I happen to make sketchbooks in my spare time. I'm giving away handmade sketchbooks to five students who show significant improvement upon completing the course (and each assignment). (Sorry, I was going to make one for everyone when I figured I'd have 6-10 people join. There's no way I can make 100+ sketchbooks while in grad school before this class is over).

Teacher qualifications

BFA in Studio Art. In-Progress MFA at a top ranking school. Multiple classes taught, ranging from Design Foundations to Art History to Painting to Drawing.
