The purpose of this course is to teach the very basics of music composition and production in Ableton Live. The focus will be on electronic music, however most of the concepts taught can be applied to any type of music.
Ableton Live. The standard version will suffice, but you will probably want to upgrade to Suite at some point if you become serious about music production.
A MIDI keyboard is highly recommended, but not necessarily /absolutely/ vital. PM me for recommendations, as I would recommend different keyboards to different people.
Patience. Music production has a very steep learning curve, but it can be incredibly rewarding. Be prepared for moments of frustration, but try not to get too discouraged. There's a great community of passionate music producers ready to help out.
This course will take place on reddit.com/r/abletonclass. There will be monthly (or possibly bi-monthly) lessons that consist of a screencast and a downloadable Live session. The screencasts will teach you concepts that are designed to be applied to the Live sessions you'll download.
You will be asked to post that Live session you modified at a later date in a homework discussion thread. I will do my best to listen to each one and give critique.
The class will start as soon as I can get screencasting software and the first lecture prepared. Stay tuned as it shouldn't take too long.
This class is totally free, but donations are greatly appreciated. (Donation link: http://goo.gl/Fq4qY)
I am also offering one-on-one lessons via Skype (or in-person if you're in the Philadelphia area) for $10 per hour.
