MUDS150 is a course intended to introduce people to MUDs (online games similar to MMORPGs) from playing your first MUD to developing a MUD. The course will include playing MUDs via telnet or a MUD client, programming to develop a MUD, thinking exercises for design and game rule enforcement and building/OLC to create a MUD world.
We will be initially working in the C programming language and Linux shell. If we have time, we may move to to more modern languages.
The course is held in this subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/MUDS150/
Please make sure you "add" the class on this page so the teacher can mass-PM if needed as well as subscribing to the subreddit.
Internet access and a considerable amount of basic computer knowledge. Programming is recommended but not required. We will teach some programming as we get into it, but this is not a CS or programming course.
The class starts Tues February 8th 2011 as semester 1. It will start off as a self-paced course but with encouraged interaction with students and the instructor. Semester 1 will last at the most 6 months.
There will be a lecture followed by homework. There will then be an assignment based on the lecture and homework. Most assignments and homework will be direct interaction with a MUD or code.
We recommend learning the programming language we use from a book, as we will not be going into detail on the code we go over.
Live lectures may occur if we decide on meeting up on a MUD to play together.
Lecture 6 part 2 is currently half done.
Playing MUDs for a decade, building/coding/running/hosting a MUD for 7 years, manages a free MUD host/server, high involved in the MUD community and a mod/auditor for 2 of the main MUD communities (MudConnector and MudBytes). Known as "Zeno McDohl" in the mudding community.
